Gopi Chandan

Talav means Pond. It is 21 km from Dwarka and 5 km from Nageshwar Jyotirlinga temple.

Once Radha ji asked for drinking water during the dance so Lord Krishna made this well from his flute and offered her water.

Lord Krishna killed the demon Bhaumasura here, freeing 16,000 princesses from His palace. These gopi princesses fell in love with Lord Krishna and wanted to marry him, thus the name Gopi Talav.

Another story is related with Arjuna. After the battle at Kurukshetra, Arjuna thought himself to be the best warrior of the world. To show him his place, Lord Krishna asked him to escort his queens to Bet Dwarka. On the way, just near this pond, Arjuna was attacked by people of Kaba community, and Arjuna was defeated. The queens understanding this left their Body in this pond to go back to Goloka(Abode of Srikrishna . So it is called Gopi Talav. The famous phrase ‘Kabe Arjun luntiyo, vohi dhanush vohi ban’ reflects this incident.

20 kms from Dwarka on the way to Bet Dwarka. The story behind the lake takes us back to Lord Krishna’s childhood when he was revered by the gopis of Vrindavan. When Krishna shifted his capital to Dwarka, the gopis couldn’t bear his estrangement. They came to meet him in Dwarka and performed raas on the day of sharad poornima. After the raas, they offered their lives to the soil of this land and merged with Lord Krishna. The soil here is fine and smooth bearing a yellow color and is believed to have divine properties cures many diseases known as Gopi Chandan. The whole area around Gopi Talav is made up of ghats for bathing with many shrines peppered around them. Many species of fishes and birds are found here thus contributing to a great atmosphere for photography.

Ashtavakra

The story of Ashtavakra's curse which a certain section of people ignore is mentioned in various hindu scriptures, below is the checklist-

# 1)Geeta Press Mahabharat -

Vyas tells Arjuna about Ashtavakra's curse.

https://freeglobaluniversity.blogspot.com/search/label/Gitas

# 2)Dakshinatya Mahabharata,Ved Vyas -

Those ladies(Wives of Krishna) in previous birth were Apsaras, they were cursed by Sage Ashtavakra to be caught by Robbers in next birth, that's the reason you could not save them,O son of Pritha.

Not only Kumbhakonam, all Southern(Dakshinatya) versions of Mahabharat mention this curse.

# 3)BharatGatha

Chapter 45,Swargarohanam.

"Vyasa tells Arjuna: It is due to the curse of the sage that the women whom you tried to protect were abducted by the robbers"

http://mahabharata-resources.org/variations/bharatagatha.html

# 4)Vishnu Purana

Vyas to Arjuna:

It is in consequence, then, of the curse of the Muni Asht́ávakra that these females, who were at first the wives of Keśava, have now fallen into the hands of the barbarians; and there is no occasion, Arjuna, for you to regret it in the least.

# 5)Agni Purana

# 6)Linga Purana

# 7)DeviBhagawat Purana

64. O Madhusûdana! After Your death, due to the curse of Astâvakra Muni, your wives will be forcibly stolen away by indomitable robbers. There is no doubt in this.

www.sacred-texts.com/hin/db/bk04ch25.htm

Astavakra's curse is clearly mentioned here.

# 8)SrimadBhagwat Purana

Canto 1 - The disappearance of Lord Krishna and the retirement of the Pandavas

Ashtavakra’s body was curved in eight places and so he walked in a very peculiar manner. Upon seeing this, those same girls were unable to check their laughter, and so the Muni became very angry and cursed them to be kidnapped by rogues, in spite of their becoming the wives of the Supreme Lord.

# 9) Padma Puran

After Krishna ascended to Vaikuntha- Arjuna went to Dvaraka and informed Krishna's wives, as well as Vasudeva and Ugrasena- about the Lord's disappearance. Then, as they all left Dvaraka, it became submerged within the ocean. As Arjuna was taking Krishna's wives to Indraprastha, the women were kidnapped by a gang of cowherds. Formerly, the wives of the demi¬gods and Gandharvas had laughed at the great sage, Ashtavakra, be¬cause of his awkward appearance. He then cursed them, saying, "You will become prostitutes."When the women begged him to retract his curse, Ashtavakra ordained that, after getting Lord Krishna as their husband, they would fall into the hands of the demigods' enemies.

# 10) Brahma / Vishnu Purana Contradiction

Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura has justified the contradiction by research in the Viṣṇu Purāṇa and Brahma Purāṇa. In these Purāṇas it is said that once the fair denizens of heaven pleased Aṣṭāvakra Muni by their service and were blessed by the muni to have the Supreme Lord as their husband. Aṣṭāvakra Muni was curved in eight joints of his body, and thus he used to move in a peculiar curved manner. The daughters of the demigods could not check their laughter upon seeing the movements of the muni, and the muni, being angry at them, cursed them that they would be kidnapped by rogues, even if they would get the Lord as their husband. Later on, the girls again satisfied the muni by their prayers, and the muni blessed them that they would regain their husband even after being robbed by the rogues. So, in order to keep the words of the great muni, the Lord Himself kidnapped His wives from the protection of Arjuna, otherwise they would have at once vanished from the scene as soon as they were touched by the rogues.

Swami Sadanand Saraswati, the secretary of the Shardapith Dwarka says, "Yes, Dwarka was devastated by the sea. According to the Bhagvat Gita, the Ekadash Skand mentions Krishna sending a message to the people of Dwarka. He told them that once he leaves this world, there would be no one on this earth to save Dwarka. The sea would finish Dwarka and hence he asks the 56 crore Yaduvanshis to leave Dwarka".

Magha

Poet Magha in his Sisupalavadha, sarga, describes in slokas 31 onwards, the city of Dwaraka,as

"The yellow glitter of the golden fort of the city in the sea throwing yellow light all round looked as if the flames of vadavagni came out tearing asunder the sea."
